Dispatchers at the City-County Jail in Carmi have for years been able to pinpoint the location from which 911 calls were made--on traditional land-line telephones.
Now they'll have similar capabilities for calls made from cellular phones.
Julie Irwin, coordinator of the county's 911 system, told the White County Emergency Telephone System Board Monday night that field-testing of 911 calls made on Verizon Wireless sets was completed March 30, and dispatchers were able to trace the location within 21 meters of the caller's actual location. She called that "very good" and said she was "really happy" with the results.
