Nokia GPS device

30 October 2006 - Nokia has launched its first dedicated satnav to come with Europe-wide maps to compete in the ever-widening personal navigation market. The Nokia 330 Auto Navigation provides seamless navigation from country to country and provides clear spoken and visual direction.

With a 3.5-inch touchscreen, 330 allows you to quickly enter addresses and follow visual instructions to your destinations. A quick address look-up provides prompted entries so that you don’t have to enter the same address time and time again.

The device comes with a 2GB memory cards with the pre-installed Europe maps, which are provided by Navteq and the Route 66 Navigate 7 application, and features a built-in GPS receiver. Visual instructions can be viewed on 2D or 3D maps, and the device can display day or night view.

It also supports the usual audio, picture, and video files. Look out for it to hit the shelves before Christmas for around €360.

Nokia N95 GPS handset

Nokia N95 - [updated, official]

Published by Rafe Blandford at 14:20 BST, September 26th

Nokia have announced the Nokia
N95, featuring an innovative double slide design with multimedia
controls and a keypad on opposite end of the phones. Read on for full
details, pictures and the full press release.

Summary: The N95 is Nokia's first HSDPA (3.5G) device, but also boasts Wi-Fi,
WCDMA, quad-band GSM, Bluetooth (including A2DP), IrDA and USB 2.0
connectivity (via mini USB connector). Other hardware features include
a 5 megapixel camera, a built in GPS, TV-Out, 3.5mm audio jack, FM Radio, a MicroSD memory card slot and 150MB of internal memory.

In
the hand the most impressive aspect of the device, given its feature
set, is its size. At 99mm x 20mm x 53mm (90cc), the N93 packs an
impressively amount into a small space. Nokia have managed to add two
major technologies to the Nseries line (GPS and HSDPA) while
significantly reducing the volume of the device. In length and width
dimensions it is larger that the other Nseries slider - the N80, but it
is considerably thinner.

HSPDA is the next generationin
cellular connectivity. The N95 is a category 6 HSPDA device which means
it is up to 10 times faster that WCDMA (3G).
Clearly HSDPA support is required at a network level, but many networks
have already begun their testing or roll out periods. The faster
connection speeds make downloading media (such as podcasts via the in
built Podcast application) more palatable and should also improve
latency/round trip times. Wi-Fi, WCDMA (3G) connectivity, together with
quad band GSM and EDGE are also supported. Bluetooth 2.0, IrDA and USB
make up the local connectivity options.

The 5.0
megapixel camera uses Carl Zeiss Optics with autofocus and digital zoom
with a dedicated 2 stage capture button on the side of the phone. Video
capture at near DVD quality is also supported. On the side of the
device there are several buttons dedicated to camera usage. This allows
the device to be held in a similar way to a traditional camera with the
screen, in landscape mode, used as the view finder and the shutter
button on bottom right hand side of the device (top right when phone is
held horizontally). On the rear of the device, next to the camera is
the slide switch, which is used to open the lens aperture and activate
camera mode. Although it is difficult to judge the image quality at
this stage the evidence we saw suggest that the N95 will be on of the
most capable camera phones available.

Find IP Location With Google Maps

SEOmoz has created a tool that allows you to enter an IP and to locate it on Google Maps. The application uses Ajax so it will display the map as you type (it's useful to test Class C IP ranges).

So next time you find a strange IP in your stats, or when you want to find the address of someone and you know only the IP, use this mashup. The results are not extremely accurate as there are many ways to hide the IP and many machines are behind a NAT.

Note: I'll be gone in a short vacation, but that doesn't mean I won't be around. Starting from tomorrow TomHTML from Zorgloob will keep you company. He asked me to tell you he's not fluent in English, but I'm not either.

Verizon serves up Chocolate phone

Verizon Wireless has brought LG Mobile Phones' Chocolate handset to U.S. shores, offering a mix of video and music features that it hopes digital-media junkies will find tasty.

Not to be outdone by the likes of youth-oriented cell phone service Helio, Verizon has snatched up the latest addition to the arsenal of trendy, media-heavy cell phones. LG Mobile Phones' Chocolate is already a hit overseas, with more than 1 million sold since its international launch outside LG's home base of South Korea.

Verizon's American version has extensive music and video capabilities tied to its V Cast media store, which promises instant downloads and a catalog of more than 1.3 million songs in Windows Media Audio (WMA) format. Songs downloaded to a Chocolate phone will cost $1.99, copies of which will be automatically sent to the user's PC. If the song is downloaded to the PC from V Cast's Web site, however, the fee is only 99 cents. The song can then be loaded onto the phone at no extra cost.

Sweet 'Chocolate' phones

There's a caveat: V Cast service is compatible only with PCs running Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Media Player 10. Downloaded music, however, can be played on any portable device that can handle WMA files. Additionally, any WMA or MP3 files can be loaded onto the Chocolate regardless of origin.

V Cast also provides access to a variety of video clips, ranging from newscasts to music videos, and games like "3D Mini Golf Castles" and "Midnight Bowling." These features are available only to V Cast subscribers who fork over an additional $15 per month. Music purchases were available only to subscribers as well, but Verizon axed that requirement Monday as part of the promotion for the U.S. release of the Chocolate.

CNET Reviews
Nicole Lee on the VX8500 LG Chocolate
The LG Chocolate looks like one sweet phone.

The Chocolate's storage memory is expandable through the use of SanDisk's MicroSD memory cards. The phone itself does not come with a memory card, according to Verizon spokesperson Brenda Raney, but SanDisk cards ranging in price from $29.99 (with 256MB of memory) to $99.99 (2GB) can be purchased along with it.

In addition to the downloading perks, the Chocolate comes equipped with Verizon's VZ Navigator GPS service and a 1.3-megapixel camera that can snap photos or record up to an hour of video.

Cell phone manufacturers and service providers have been making big moves to eat into the field of portable digital media, dominated by Apple Computer's iPod. But there are still hurdles to overcome. After the tepid response to the Motorola Rokr--the product of a partnership with Apple for iTunes software--companies like Sprint have tried to improve on the model of a media-rich phone by offering the capacity for more songs, faster downloads and better compatibility with PCs.

LG and Verizon take a different marketing path, playing up the Chocolate not as a phone that plays music, but as a device that's "part MP3 player, part phone." Indeed, the handset, with its click wheel interface, bears a conspicuous resemblance to an iPod when closed; the keypad remains hidden until the phone is slid open.

The Chocolate by LG is priced at $149.99, after a $50 rebate and with a two-year contract agreement.

It would be perfect if we could compete with everyone, without being dependent on their time. No matter if it’s a car race, bike tour, sailing trip or a relaxed hiking tour.
RealReplay offers the solution. You simply choose the track you want to race on, select your opponent and start right away! Your own race will be recorded by an accurate GPS system, which makes it possible to see your own current position and the route your opponent took when he recorded his race. In some games this is known as the “Ghost” mode – now you can race for real!

Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis (mobile phone version), by Square Enix
Location: Tokyo, Japan - since 2004
[GameSpy] The most interesting twist in Before Crisis is how it utilizes the properties of a mobile phone. Materia is an integral part of the game and players will need to use the F900's camera and phone features to make the most out of it. To activate the various types of material, you must take a picture of an object of a similar color. However, each phone can only have a finite amount of material; the only way to get more is to interact with other users. (It's almost as devilishly clever as needing another player to catch all the Pokemon.) Players can also call each other for help when they're stuck or tag along in an adventure, though not in an MMORPG sense as the creators want the game to be more random.

Stunts are comprised of a random combination of 3 elements: 1) an object commonly found in the city (e.g. bodega) 2) a street game (e.g. stickball) and 3) a wildcard/urban situation (e.g. happy hour). Players interpret these elements as they wish, then stage and photograph their stunt in order to claim a spot on the map. The more stunts players perform the more turf they claim. But of course some players may want to compete for the same territory. In order to hold on to territory, players stunts must score high with the rest of the game community.

Cellphone GPS services find their way into market: "Cellphone GPS services find their way into market

(Boston Globe, The (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Apr. 19--The Global Positioning System devices that can help people navigate an unfamiliar city or find the nearest pizza joint are moving off the dashboard and into the cellphone.

Cellphones with location technology are already a hit in Japan and South Korea. In the United States, millions of cellphones already contain GPS technology by order of the federal government, which sought to ensure that emergency workers could locate cellphone users who place emergency 911 calls. "

Wireless 911 system tests out well: Irwin

Dispatchers at the City-County Jail in Carmi have for years been able to pinpoint the location from which 911 calls were made--on traditional land-line telephones.

Now they'll have similar capabilities for calls made from cellular phones.

Julie Irwin, coordinator of the county's 911 system, told the White County Emergency Telephone System Board Monday night that field-testing of 911 calls made on Verizon Wireless sets was completed March 30, and dispatchers were able to trace the location within 21 meters of the caller's actual location. She called that "very good" and said she was "really happy" with the results.
